The Weathervane Theatre in Whitefield, NH and Producing Artistic Director Ethan Paulini will expand programming in 2019. The new Interns InConcert Series will kick off with a presentation of the Tony Award winning musical Spring Awakening. Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening features Book and Lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik. Premiering on Broadway in 2008, it won 8 Tony Awards including Best Score, Best Book and Best Musical. A recent revival was also Tony nominated for Best Musical Revival. Marisa Kirby will direct and choreograph.

This new series will join the alternating repertory for 3 performances throughout the Summer. Designed to highlight scores of remarkable musical quality that present casting or technical challenges which prevents consideration for full production, Interns InConcert not only allows our audiences a glimpse of some of the best scores, it also allows our audiences the chance to really get to know these young performers. With a dozen performers from all over the country from some of the best musical theatre training programs, the Weathervane Intern Company (WIPs) is nationally recognized. The intern company also comprises the Patchwork Players, presenting a season of 4 musicals for children of all ages. While the interns are known for their family friendly fare on Friday mornings and on tour throughout the North Country, it should be noted that Spring Awakening contains strong language and adult themes and is for mature audiences only.

"Spring Awakening is one of the most acclaimed scores written in the last 20 years. The original Broadway production was a staggering artistic achievement" says Producing Artistic Director, Ethan Paulini "However, as a show that focuses on the delicate and sometimes challenging reality of maturing youth with a cast of 11 teenage performers meant North Country audiences might never get to hear this landmark piece of Broadway history. Because of these casting constraints it became clear to me that this would be the perfect piece to inaugurate this exciting new series."

The Weathervane Theatre was founded in in 1965 by Gibbs Murray and the late Tom Haas. For over half a century, it has presented high quality professional productions of plays and musicals. One of the few remaining alternating rep companies in the United States, the Weathervane is recognized as a historical institution nationwide, boasting among it's alumni Elizabeth Stanley, Tally Sessions, 4 time Tony nominee Judy Kuhn and recent Tony Award Winner Ari'el Stachel.
