Seacoast Repertory Theatre (the Rep) proudly presents URINETOWN: The Musical. Winner of three Tony© Awards, URINETOWN is an innovatively hilarious, zany musical with a genuinely funny mix of loving parody and biting satire - a tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold - and its use (and especially its release) is strictly controlled.
Praised by critics and audiences alike for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be - URINETOWN, written by Greg Kotis and composer Mark Hollman, catapults the venerable "comedic romp" for a new generation with its outrageous perspective, modern wit, and ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter from anyone who has ever has too much coffee or desperately needed a "comfort break." It's loaded with memorable tunes and toe-tapping tunes, most of which parody other Broadway hits from shows such as "Annie," "Evita," "Les Misérables," "West Side Story," and "Fiddler on the Roof." At the same time URINETOWN reflects important and timely issues facing society today: unsustainable resource consumption, corporate greed and government corruption.
Set in the near future, URINETOWN is a Gotham like city in which the sewer system has been crippled by a 20-year drought with no end in sight. Water is so scarce that private toilets have become illegal. In a mad and desperate attempt to regulate water consumption, the government forces residents to use public, pay-per-use toilets. The catch is, every toilet in the city is owned and operated by a huge and corrupt corporation called Urine Good Company. The gradually escalating price to pee is no important matter to a well-off few, but the teeming masses of poor have to scrape together enough money every day in order to take care of their "private business" and are charged for every flush. Anyone refusing to pay for the privilege to pee is immediately hauled off to Urinetown - a mysterious place where people go but never return.
