The River Street Theatre (RST), a project of The Park Theatre, will collaborate with The MacDowell Colony in recognition of the 2017 MacDowell Medal in the Arts Award honoring David Lynch on Sunday, August 13.
The RST will present, prior to the Medal Day presentation, two of Lynch's most important films: MULHOLLAND DRIVE (August 11 at 7:00 pm) and ERASERHEAD (August 12, 7:00 pm). Additionally, prior to each film will be a selection of the rarely seen David Lynch short films.
MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001)
Along Mulholland Drive, nothing is what it seems. In the unreal universe of Los Angeles, the city bares its schizophrenic nature, an uneasy blend of innocence and corruption, love and loneliness, beauty and depravity. A woman is left with amnesia following a car accident. An aspiring young actress finds her staying in her aunt's home. The puzzle begins to unfold, propelling us through a mysterious labyrinth of sensual experiences until we arrive at the intersection of dreams and nightmares.
Stars Naomi Watts, Robert Forster, and Justin Theroux.
ERASERHEAD (1977)
This surreal nightmare examines male paranoia. The hero and title character, Henry, faces a number of horrifying obstacles in meeting someone of the opposite sex, meeting her parents, and procreating. Produced during a one-and-a-half-year period while director David Lynch was a student at the American Film Institute, the film launched him as a major new talent admired by cinephiles and filmmakers all over the world. It stands today as a milestone in personal, independent filmmaking. Stars Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, and Allan Joseph.
Tickets for the David Lynch films are $8.00 (seniors/military/students/teachers: $7). More program and schedule information, as well as ticket purchases, can be found at riverst.org or by calling the RST Box Office (603) 532-8888. About The Park Theatre & River Street Theatre
The Park Theatre first opened in Jaffrey in 1922 and was the center of community life as a movie and vaudeville house for 54 years until it closed in 1976. Purchased by The Park Theatre, Inc. in 2006, it will be rebuilt as a state-of-the-art film and performing arts center, featuring two auditoriums seating 485, presenting movies, live theatre, including children's productions, concerts, and lectures as well as offering a place for business and community gatherings for the Monadnock Region and its 100,000 residents, school districts and dynamic artistic community. The new Park Theatre is scheduled to open in 2018.
The Park Theatre currently operates the River Street Theatre (RST), a small live entertainment and cinema venue, located adjacent to the construction site as an interim theatre until the new Park Theatre opens. Opened in January of 2017, the RST holds the title of "smallest theatre in New England."
