New Hampshire Theatre Project's 26th season continues with Goblin Market, an intimate chamber musical featuring award-winning actors Heather Glenn Wixson and Linette Miles as sisters who find their bonds of love tested by temptation. Based on Christina Rossetti's most famous poem, the play is rich with evocative images, haunting music, vivid language, and a fantastic journey that follows the plight of two sisters inexplicably drawn to a dark glen where they encounter a band of mysterious "goblin merchant men" who offer them what they most desire and what they most fear. Director Danielle Howard, in her first production at NHTP, describes Goblin Market as "part fairytale, part memory, and a feast for all the senses."
This little known musical gem had its start at the Vineyard Theatre in New York City in 1985 and quickly moved to Off-Broadway where it would go on to receive five Drama Desk nominations and the BEST PLAYS Special Citation for Musical Composition and Adaptation. Music director Peter Motson describes the music of Goblin Market as "an eclectic score that combines Pen's original haunting and poignant melodies with snatches of Brahms and Antonio Lotti." Along with Motson on keyboard, the production will also feature Cathryn Norris on violin, Vicky Myers on cello, and Dave Hamilton on synthesizer and percussion.
Jeanné McCartin is designing the lovely Victorian costumes, with set, lighting and prop design by Meghann Beauchamp.
Sponsors for Goblin Market include the Gail Adams Music Studio, Duy Bui Music Studio, Full Community Thrift Store, Saunders & Silverstein LLP, and Roland Glenn.
