As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Timberlane Regional High School planned to present a PG version of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd next spring. However, administrators feared it would not be family friendly and attempted to cancel the production.
In response, hundreds of supporters for SWEENEY TODD gathered at a meeting on April 2 to fight for the show. At the three-hour forum, the majority of the attendees were in support of SWEENEY. Superintendent Earl Metzler said he was not completely opposed to the play but that he needed to think of the community as a whole.
Now, the Eagle-Tribune reports that SWEENEY TODD will go on as planned.
Metzler announced this afternoon that school administrators have given the go-ahead, provided the following criteria are met:
- The SWEENEY TODD adaptation performed will be deemed "high school-appropriate".
- A second play will be performed that is appropriate for all ages. This second show would run in December 2014.
Overall, not a bad outcome - more theatre for the school and a challenging musical for the Timberlane Players!
