Amadeus

by Peter Shaffer
January 7-23, 2011
Fridays & Saturdays @ 8PM, Sundays @ 2PM
959 Islington Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801

Amadeus, Peter Shaffer's exquisite masterpiece and winner of a Tony Award for Best Play and an Academy Award for Best Film, opens Friday, January 7 at New Hampshire Theatre Project. After 20 years and six versions, this latest script is hailed by reviewers as an "extraordinarily focused and lucid play" that is far superior to the original which opened on Broadway 30 years ago. Infused with Mozart's brilliant and heartbreaking music, the story of Court Composer Antonio Salieri's fierce jealousy of child prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is theatre at its very best - a dramatic power struggle between two imperfect human creatures and their perfect Divine Muse. Directed by Genevieve Aichele, with costume design by Michele Macadaeg and set/lighting design by Quentin Stockwell, NHTP's production takes place in a world that is both magically distant and disconcertingly close to home.

Blair Hundertmark takes on yet another formidable role - shifting from the peak of Salieri's career to the fragile shell of a man he becomes in his later years. With CJ Lewis tackling the multi-layered Mozart, supporting actors include Jamie Bradley, Fred Calcinari, David Copp, Robin Fowler, Todd Hunter, Peter Josephson, Sofia Piel, Rebecca Rudolf, Kathleen Somssich, Victoria Townsend and Samantha Cistulli as Constanze. Meghann Beauchamp & Adam MacDougall will co-design the intricate musical soundscape.

In conjunction with this production, NHTP will host a community forum on Creating Perfect Music in an Imperfect World on Thursday, January 20. Sponsored by Peoples United Bank, the forum will feature professional musicians who struggle to balance creativity with financial security. Other sponsors for Amadeus are Cornerstone Treecare, Diverse Networks, Harman Law Offices, Portsmouth Family Practice, Dr. Gary & Patricia Kish, and the Millstein/Stern Families.
