Executive Director Elaine Gatchell announces a Showcase event at Leddy Center in January! Aspiring playwright, Donald Tongue of Londonderry and an actor with Leddy Center for many years, has written a "dramedy", his word to describe this dramatic comedy written about a backstage situation.
The story revolves around Samantha Wheelwright, (played by Deirdre Bridge) legendary ex-Brit, star of stage and film, whose career is faltering, and who finds herself performing the role of Mrs. Cratchit, in a traveling production of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The actor playing Bob Cratchit has suddenly taken ill and the producer, much to the dismay of Ms. Wheelwright, is forced to hire a much younger, inexperienced, local actor, Matthew Simmons (played by John Rodgers). This romantic dramedy shows what happens when youthful star-struck enthusiasm slams headlong into mid-life realism and cynicism. They both grow and learn from the encounter and, in the end, the world seems different-the scene changes.
Donald Tongue is a New England playwright and a member of the Dramatists Guild of America with four published plays to his credit. His play Void, which has received over a dozen productions, has been performed in Boston and Los Angeles. Other plays written by Don include School Portrait Monologues, produced in New Zealand, and Fishbowl, a participant in the 2010 short play festival in NYC at the Manhattan Repertory Theatre, where it was held over for an extended run. Donald's play about the poet Robert Frost, My Neighbor, the Poet, was commissioned and produced by theatre KAPOW.
Leddy Center is celebrating its 40th Season of bringing Broadway musicals and classic drama to our greater communities as a non-profit 501c3 NH Arts and Education Organization.
