For its ninth season, the Northern New England Repertory Theatre Company (NNE Rep) will present Henrik Ibsen's powerful drama Hedda Gabler* on the Sawyer Center stage at Colby-Sawyer College in New London. Hedda Gabler, beautiful, headstrong and passionate, but suffocated by the bourgeois existence of her loveless marriage and thwarted by the social conventions of her time, yearns for a deed of "deliberate courage," for an act "both spontaneous and beautiful." NNE Rep's production of Hedda Gabler will run for seven performances from May 30th through June 8th.

Henrik Ibsen, considered by many to be the father of modern drama, was a major 19th-century Norwegian playwright whose plays continue to be produced worldwide at a rate second only to those of Shakespeare. Ibsen was known for his deep understanding and unflinching depiction of human nature, and in the character of Hedda Gabler, he created one of the most complex and intriguing women in all of dramatic literature.

The play portrays a circle of people in an era when the foundations of society were shifting beneath their feet. Written in 1890, Hedda Gabler is firmly rooted in its time but still resonates with audiences more than a century later. Ibsen's genius was his ability to present fully realized characters whose very humanity makes them timeless.

L.A.-based director Trace Oakley returns again this season, as do all three leading actors from NNE Rep's acclaimed 2012 production of Anna Christie: Katrina Ferguson (Anna), Milan Dragicevich (Mat), and John Goodlin (Chris) will be returning to play Hedda Gabler, Eilert Lovborg, and Judge Brack, respectively. Mark Irish, a veteran of four NNE Rep seasons, will play Tesman. All four are members of Actors' Equity, and rounding out a strong cast will be local actors Cindy Johnson as Mrs. Elvsted, Judy Wallace as Aunt Julie, and Ellen Wassell as Berte.

Evening performances of Hedda Gabler begin at 8 PM on May 30, 31, June 1, 6, 7, & 8, with a matinee on June 2 starting at 2 PM. Tickets are $28, with student and group rates available.
