Operadagen Rotterdam presents GALA! Awards ceremony for the second year in a row, in Oude Luxor Theater on Tuesday 22 May. The festive event unites opera and music theatre makers from all over the world. A raft of amazing artists will take to the stage. The evening also sees the Operadagen Awards ceremony 2018, in recognition of special contributions to music theatre and opera. Wende, ARIAH LESTER (Lester Arias), Lisa Verbelen, Meral Polat, and Rosa Ensemble from the Dutch industry are being lauded in addition to Thom Luz (Switzerland) in het international field. GALA! Includes performances by singer/entertainer Sven Ratzke (also the host of the evening), Wende, Meral Polat, Lisa Verbelen, and ARIAH LESTER (Lester Arias).

GALA! also marks the start of Opera Europa's International professionals programme, which provides the talented makers at GALA! with the opportunity to spread their wings in the field of international opera and music theatre. This year's advisory committee for the awards consisted of Viktorien van Hulst (Theaterfestival Boulevard), Elsemieke Scholte (d e t h e a t e r m a k e r), Jerry Aerts (deSingel), Kees Lesuis (Oerol Festival), Jan Zoet (Academy of Theatre and Dance), and Guy Coolen (Operadagen Rotterdam).

Operadagen Award 2017 winners Nora Fischer and the Ragazze Quartet (plus others) will perform The secret diary of Nora Plain directly after GALA! It is a modern song cycle about the entanglement of privacy, paranoia, and eroticism. Morris Kliphuis composed the music and Dutch singer-songwriter Lucky Fonz III wrote the lyrics.

Operadagen Rotterdam is an international opera and music theatre festival with contemporary, innovative, and ground-breaking productions, created by young and adventurous makers from all over the world. Operadagen Rotterdam presents stories about pushing boundaries and the search for a new identity under the overall festival theme, Lost & Found, which runs from 2017 through 2020.
