BroadwayWorld is excited to expand its popular feature series outside the U.S. borders setting our sights on showcasing performance companies around the world! Each month we will introduce you to an intearnational theater, dance and opera company located in one of our coverage countries.
Today, we feature the renowned Nederlands Dans Theater in The Hague, Netherlands!
From its home base in The Hague, Nederlands Dans Theater makes contemporary dance which every year tens of thousands of people from all over the world come to enjoy.
The company is led by artistic director Paul Lightfoot and consists of two groups: Nederlands Dans Theater 1 and Nederlands Dans Theater 2, together good for 160 performances a year at home and abroad.
Thanks to Nederlands Dans Theater's quality, the dance company has been one of the most important figureheads of Dutch art abroad for years.
The dancers of Nederlands Dans Theater 1 are well known for their great class and virtuosity. They are at the top of their dance career and know as no other how to get the company's repertoire across to the audience.
Together with the famous resident choreographers Paul Lightfoot and Sol León, various guest choreographers (like Kylián, Pite, Inger, Naharin) and artists from other disciplines, the dancers create six new ballets per season.
Nederlands Dans Theater 2 is the launching pad for young dancers, who are carefully selected through auditions. They dance choreographies by the new generation of dance makers, like Alexander Ekman.
The group performs all over the world. It is the company's breeding ground, where talented dancers grow up and young up-and-coming choreographers get the chance to develop.
