Musical guest contributions in this program are by violinist Isabelle van Keulen and the chorus of Dutch National Ballet.
The Four Seasons has its premiere at Dutch National Ballet on Saturday April 4, 2020 and can be seen until Sunday April 19, 2020 at Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Amsterdam.
Associate artist David Dawson began his career 25 years ago as a dancer with the Dutch National Ballet where he also created his first ballets. Now Dawson is one of the world's most sought after choreographers. Max Richters ethereal adaptation of Vivaldi's famous composition Four Seasons inspired Dawson to create a work that explores the cycle of life. The Four Seasons created in 2018 is a co-production between Dutch National Ballet and Semperoper Ballett. Set design is by Eno Henze and costumes are designed by Yukimo Takeshima. The music is performed by the Dutch Ballet Orchestra and the world-famous violinist Isabelle van Keulen.
A Dutch first in Four Seasons is Wayne McGregor's McGregor's choreography is a unique and impressive translation of the music, alternating gorgeous, lyrical dance scenes with powerful and dynamic group pieces. For this creation Wayne McGregor was inspired by Leonard Bernstein's resounding Chichester Psalms, an eclectic mix of Hebrew texts, Broadway jazz and Christian choral music sung by the Chorus of Dutch National Opera. For Yugen ('profound beauty' in Japanese), Wayne McGregor collaborated with British-Dutch ceramic artist Edmund de Waal for the sets and renowned British-Iranian fashion designer Shirin Guild for costumes. Yugen a co-production with The Royal Ballet had its première in London in 2018.
Juanjo Arqués is young creative associate at Dutch National Ballet. Since ending his dance career with the company, Arqués has enjoyed success a freelance choreographer, commissioned to create pieces for top companies including the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Moscow Ballet Theatre and Acosta Danza. For his new choreography for Dutch National Ballet, MANOEUVRE, Arqués uses John Adams' composition Shaker Loops. Tatyana van Walsum designs both sets and costumes.
