Review: PALAZZO at Spiegeltent: REUBENLICIOUS - SO DELICIOUS! Image

After an absence of 6 years, Palazzo is back in Amsterdam with a new show: Haut Chaos. Together with chef Joris Bijdendijk (executive chef of RIJKS Restaurant), a feast for all the senses is served.

In the beautiful Spiegeltent, tables are set, candles are lit and the waiting staff welcome you with a smile.

The dinner show begins. The 4 course menu looks promising, though disappoints a bit. The dessert in particular has a peculiar choice of flavours. It doesn't really come together, which is a pity. Presentation wise it looks really pretty though. Also the service is quick, friendly and welcoming.

Star of the evening and deserving an one-man show: host, master of ceremonies and diva extraordinaire mr. Reuben Kaye. Born and raised Down Under, Reuben is delightful to watch and listen to. His comedy, charm and witty engagements with the audience are exactly what you need during a night like this.

The acts are a mix of stand up comedy, aerial work, acrobatics and music. Though the artists are obviously skilful in their craft, the acts are mediocre at best. Outdated, corny and with very little innovation. Even worse, with very little energy of the performers, it didn't feel like an exciting opening night.

Questionable wardrobe choices, tacky sketches which are just too easy. You wonder why they chose to challenge your intelligence, as some acts could also be fit for children.
The band which plays in between the acts was an enigma. Never before have I witnessed a performer who so clearly don't want to be heard and/or seen. Every number they played was transformed in a jazzy arrangement, which is fine, if done right. This unfortunately was not.

In conclusion, the show for sure has potential, but at this point has not yet lived up to their own promise of a spectacular night out.
