The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) is an exotic adventure; a classical story about the struggle between good and evil. It's a fairytale....a story from the world of imagination inhabited by princes, princesses, dragons and exotic birds.
Mozart wrote "Die Zauberflöte" in 1791 to be performed in a small theatre in a suburban part of Vienna - which had no resemblance whatsoever to the huge opera theatres of today. The Amsterdam Marionette Theater brings back something of this original intimacy of Mozart's time. An interesting fact is that both Mozart and his friend and librettist Schikaneder were fascinated by the so called "magic opera": a form of music theater developed by Anton Stranitzky. This Stranitzky wrote history with his invention and representation on stage of the comical figure Hanswurst (the character on which Papageno in Die Zauberflöte was partly based). Moreover: he was himself the director of a marionette theatre! Stranitzky combined elements of the Vienna Folk Comedy with elements of puppetry and impressive magical theatrical effects. This new style inspired Mozart and Schikaneder to write their own "magic opera". A story from the realm of the imagination, in which our marionettes feel completely at home.
