Street Theatre Company is presenting a free public performance of the play, No More Secrets, on Monday, May 23 at 6 p.m. at the Martha O'Bryan Center in East Nashville. No More Secrets is being presented through the partnerships of the Metro Nashville Arts Commission and the Martha O'Bryan Center.
No More Secrets is a musical that tells the tale of a pre-teenaged girl named Jenny who for years has been sexually abused by a trusted neighbor, and her subsequent disclosure. The play is designed to entertain while at the same time provide children with information about child abuse and how they can protect themselves and others from abuse.
What is unique about the show is that is contains a remarkable blend of music, humor and candor. It addresses many of the concerns children may have about disclosing. The show features adult actors portraying children and adult characters and was written to be performed for primarily elementary (kindergarten through fifth grade).
The show is performed by professional actors who have been trained by family counselors, child advocates and child protection agencies professionals. The play is 45-minutes in length followed by a 15 minutes question and answer period during which
important elements of the play are emphasized. No More Secrets toured to 15 area elementary schools in the spring of 2009, is currently in the middle of a 10 school tour this spring, and features area actors Jama Bowen, Mike Baum, Erica Haines, Bakari King, Janna Landry, and Tonya Pewitt.
Families are invited to attend the performance to help their children learn about the prevention of sexual abuse or what to do if they or someone they know is being abused. The Martha O'Bryan Center empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty to transform their lives through work, education, employment and fellowship. The Martha O'Bryan Center is located at 711 South 7th Street, Nashville.
