Street Theatre Company has a well-earned reputation for choosing off-the-wall cult classics and for staging traditional musicals with an edgy spin. In the third show of its 2016 season, STC combines both with the Tony-winning, side-splittingly hilarious musical URINETOWN.
"I chose Urinetown quite simply because I love it," says Street Theatre Company's Artistic Director Jason Tucker, who is directing URINETOWN. "It's smart, funny, sensitive, and delightful." Starring a talented cast that includes beloved Nashville actress Sondra Morton, this comedic musical dystopia imagines a world with a major water shortage where even toilets are regulated.
URINETOWN received critical acclaim and garnered several awards both on and off-Broadway, including three Tony Awards. Parodying the Broadway musical as an art form, URINETOWN also satirizes the legal system, capitalism, economic inequality, and corrupt politics. "Its themes of resource management, the power of the oligarchy, and revolution are actually more relevant now than when URINETOWN first opened off-Broadway," says Jason Tucker. STC favorite Corinne Bupp (who is playing Hope Cladwell) admits that it is "unnerving how relevant URINETOWN is," adding that "now is the perfect time to come see this show."
Another Street Theatre favorite, Mike Baum, plays Officer Lockstock (and yes, there is also an Officer Barrel!). "URINETOWN touches on several serious topics," quotes Baum, "...but it does it with a wink and a smile and upbeat song-and-dance numbers."
Nashville audiences have come to expect high caliber performances from Street Theatre as they have voted it one of the city's top three theater companies the past several years in a row. So far, the company's electrifying 2016 season has only increased that expectation, and the award-winning URINETOWN promises to be no exception.
"The audience [will have] a good time at the theater but will walk out thinking, Wait a minute...that was way too relevant," says Mike Baum, but Jason Tucker reminds Nashville that "most importantly, it's really, really funny!"
URINETOWN plays at Street Theatre Company August 12-28 Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at7:30 and Sundays at 5:00. Tickets are $20 for adults and $16 for children, students, and seniors. Thursdays (August 18 and 25) are Pay-What-You-Can. "Ya gotta go!"
