Kicking off Street Theatre Company's mainstage productions is Eclipsed, the first and only play of the season. The critically acclaimed show written by Danai Gurira was nominated for six Tony Awards.
The drama documents a group of women being held captive in Liberia in 2003. Their lives set on a nightmarish detour by civil war, the captive wives of a Liberian rebel officer form a hardscrabble sisterhood. With the arrival of a new girl who can read-and the return of an old one who can kill-their possibilities are quickly transformed. Drawing on reserves of wit and compassion, these defiant survivors ask: When the fog of battle lifts, could a different destiny emerge? ECLIPSED offers a chilling, humanizing and surprisingly funny portrait of transformation and renewal. With wit, compassion, and defiance, this gripping play unearths the wreckage of war and celebrates the women who navigate and survive the most hostile of circumstances.
Director Alicia Haymer says: "I am so honored to direct this show at this time in history. The women in Eclipsed, much like the women that are now stepping forward to tell their truths, have stories that can teach us all, if we are open to listen. The stories aren't pretty, but they are honest and raw- things we look for in good, compelling art. I can't wait to share this beautiful piece of work with you, Nashville!"
