Have you ever been tempted to flee your own life? That's the question posed by playwright Steven Dietz in his play Becky's New Play, opening at Belmont University's Black Box Theatre on Friday, July 29, in a new production from Actors Bridge Ensemble, directed by the company's own Vali Forrister.
In Dietz's play, "Becky Foster is caught in middle age, middle management and in a middling marriage-with no prospects for change on the horizon. Then one night a socially inept and grief-struck millionaire stumbles into the car dealership where Becky works. Becky is offered nothing short of a new life... and the audience is offered a chance to ride shotgun in a way that most plays wouldn't dare. Becky's New Play is a thoroughly original comedy with serious overtones, a devious and delightful romp down the road not taken."
Becky's New Car stars Kim Bretton, who won critical acclaim for her role in Actors Bridge's production of Vincent in Brixton and starred in the company's production of Marcus Hummons' new, original musical The Piper. Also appearing onstage with Bretton in Becky's New Car are Matthew Carlton, Brock Hart, CJ Tucker, Jackie Johnson, Josiah Gibbs and Billy Rosenberg.
In its review of Becky's New Car, Variety wrote: "Gently and consistently funny-right up to the point that it's touching, and then even a little bit after that. BECKY'S NEW CAR takes the audience on a smart, comic cruise through the perils of middle-aged longing and regret."
Becky's New Car runs Friday and Saturday evenings, July 29-30 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, July 31 at 4:30 p.m. and Thursday-Saturday, August 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 7 at 4:30 p.m. at the Belmont Black Box Theater. Tickets are $18 ($15 for students/seniors) and made be purchased through Belmont"s Central Ticket Office.
