Nashville Rep will produce Posterity to run from February 11 - 25, with discounted previews on February 9 and 10. Posterity, by Pulitzer and Tony Award-wining playwright Doug Wright, had its world premiere at Atlantic Theater Company in New York. Nashville Rep's production will be only the second production of this play - and a regional premiere.

Wright was awarded the Ingram New Works Fellowship from Nashville Rep during The Rep's 2013-14 season. In that fellowship he focused his energies and maximized the resources provided by Nashville Rep to complete the play Posterity. Then in May 2014 it was at Nashville Rep's Ingram New Works Festival where the script received its first public reading and enthralled the audience.

"When Doug Wright was working on Posterity as Nashville Rep's Ingram Fellow," says Nashville Rep Producing Artistic DirectorRené D. Copeland, "it was clear that it would be an outstanding play - one asking how a person wants to be remembered after his or her death."

"Nashville Rep performing the regional premiere of Posterity is an appropriate homecoming," continues Copeland, "since The Rep's Ingram New Works Project helped Doug get the script on its feet. For years scripts created through the Ingram have left Nashville for performances across the country, and I'm beyond excited that out of this impressive catalog of plays, Posterity is one that will appear locally in front of our audiences as a fully staged production."

About Posterity

When Henrik Ibsen, near the end of his career, is brought together with Norway's favorite sculptor, Gustav Vigeland, the sculptor's ambitions require him to persuade a reluctant Ibsen to sit for him. Their battle of wills and ideas begins. Debating what a person's true legacy is - the work achieved during our life or how our loved ones remember us - unexpectedly teaches them something fundamental.

A startlingly beautiful play, these two explore a complex yet basic human question: Who will I be to posterity? NOTE: This play contains brief nudity.

About of the play's genesis

Playwright Henrik Ibsen and sculptor Gustav Vigeland crossed paths when their government commissioned Vigeland to create a new bust of Ibsen. This commission occurred at a time when Ibsen was experiencing a series of strokes, and each time the two got together, Ibsen's declining health resulted in his altered physical appearance. Thus, Vigeland would begin a new bust each session. This scenario was the seed for Wright's idea to write Posterity.

Other well-known works by Wright include I Am My Own Wife (Pulitzer and Tony Award winner), Quills, and the musical Grey Gardens.

Nashville Rep's Posterity runs February 11 - 25 in Johnson Theater at Tennessee Performing Arts Center located at 505 Deaderick Street in downtown Nashville. Preview performances are February 9 - 10.
