In 2009, the Junior League of Nashville began a local educational program called Junior League's Kids in the Kitchen in partnership with the Middle Tennessee and Cumberland Valley Troops of the Girl Scouts of America. . This year, JLN will host Kids in the Kitchen at the Martha O'Bryan Center as a strategy to attract a broader audience of 4th through 6th graders, including children at the James A. Cayce Homes, the city's largest housing project.
Session 1: Girl scouts 9:00-12:00
Session 2: Local children 1:00-4:00
Kids in the Kitchen 2011 will feature ten activity stations hosted by local experts in hopes to teach children how to make healthy lifestyle choices. A registered dietitian will show kids how to prepare simple, healthy snacks. A local fitness expert and Physical Education teacher will be doing fun exercises including hula hooping and jumping rope. There will be an Iron Chef station, a food pyramid station, a portion size station and a station illustrating the benefits of water. In addition, students from Belmont University will join in to discuss body image and self worth. In the Two Foods Game, children will be challenged to choose the healthiest food and to round out the event there will be a pediatric dentist to discuss the health value of good dental hygiene.
