In mid-2008 the Nashville Public Library and the Nashville Jazz Workshop undertook a historic collaboration merging the magic puppetry of the library's acclaimed Wishing Chair Productions with the Jazz Workshop's world-class musicians. The aim was to introduce young children to the music of American jazz master Duke Ellington. The result is a rollicking, swinging, and touching trip through Ellington's musical world. The show was seen by several thousand people at the Downtown Library last fall, and will be seen by thousands more Metro school children this winter and spring. There will be two showings, 2:00 and 3:30 pm. This will be a special opportunity for families who missed it the first time around or who want an encore performance.
Presented in collaboration with the Nashville Jazz Workshop, this concert is made possible by an Arts Builds Communities (ABC) grant from the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission in cooperation with the Tennessee Arts Commission.

The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957
Presence or Absence: The Photographs of Tokihiro Sato

Friday, June 18 Curator's Perspective: The Golden Age of Couture: 6:30 p.m. Paris and London 1947-1957

Auditorium

Free

This talk will explore the golden years of Haute Couture in Paris and London after World War Two when Christian Dior's "New Look" of 1947 made the headlines, shocking and delighting in equal measure. Dior's luxurious full skirts signaled an end to austerity and launched one of the most glamorous decades in fashion. Haute Couture was defined by its stylishness, impeccable craftsmanship, and the intricate detailing of its hand sewn garments. It was also an important business that spread into accessories, cosmetics, perfume, and ready to wear; employed thousands of people; and was vital for Europe's postwar economy. Curator Claire Wilcox of the Victoria and Albert Museum will discuss the processes required to create Haute Couture garments and the challenges and discoveries involved in curating this major show.

Friday, June 18 Music in the Grand Lobby

6:00-8:00 p.m. Jerry Krahn Jazz Quintet

Free

Enjoy Jerry Krahn's superb talents as he fronts his terrific jazz ensemble. His repertoire features the styles of early jazz guitar masters including Eddie Lang and Django Reinhart. His arrangements of 20s and 30s jazz and pop standards are delivered with flair. Jerry carries these guitars into the 21st century with soulful versions of contemporary jazz, personal compositions and jazz-laced countrypolitan hits that combine styles of Joe Pass, Chet Atkins, George Benson and Pat Metheny. This night, the emphasis will be on tunes from the period 1947-1957, coinciding with the time period of The Golden Age of Couture.

Thursday, June 24 Music in the Grand Lobby

6:00-8:00 p.m. Donal Hinley - Glass Harmonica

Free

In demand at Renaissance and folk festivals around the country, Donal Hinley is a virtuoso on a homemade musical instrument often called the glass harmonica. The stemware that makes up the instrument was purchased at thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales; only a few of the glasses are actually made of crystal. Some molding and window spline is used to secure the glasses to a well worn piece of plywood. The ethereal music is produced by rubbing a wet finger around the rim of the glass causing it to vibrate. The result is ethereal, haunting and beautiful. How perfect with the work of Dale Chihuly in the Upper-Level Gallery!

Christian Dior, the most influential fashion designer from the late1940s through the late 1950s, designed Marlene Dietrich's dresses for Stage Fright. Dior actually dressed Dietrich on- and off-stage and was so important to the actress that she had him written into her contract for the movie. In fact, she was so insistent that Dior be the one to design her wardrobe that she declared to Alfred Hitchcock, "No Dior, No Dietrich!" This film is one of the first instances in which a leading actress wore couture creations instead of the clothing that the film studio costumier had decided on.

About the film:

Set in the world of theater, Stage Fright follows a struggling actress's efforts to help a friend prove his innocence after he is accused of committing murder. Starring Marlene Dietrich, Richard Todd, and Jane Wyman. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 1950. 110 minutes. 35mm.

U-Ram Choe: New Urban Species

Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery

February 19-May 16, 2010

U-Ram Choe, an artist from Seoul, South Korea, creates mechanized stainless steel structures that suggest hybrids of the mechanical and the organic in the creation of new life forms. Powered by motors, the action of these structures mimics the repetitive patterns of movement found in nature-breathing, the opening and closing of flowers, or the swimming motion of fish. While relying on traditional mechanical principles, the works allude to contemporary robots, which are increasingly designed to function independently of human control.

This exhibition was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957
Ingram Gallery
June 18-September 12, 2010

The launch of Christian Dior's "New Look" in 1947 marked the beginning of a momentous decade in fashion history, which Dior himself called a "golden age." The couture houses of Paris and London, which had traditionally served wealthy private clients, opened boutiques and licensed their designs, thereby becoming global brands and household names. Through clothing (primarily evening dresses and suits), shoes, and photographs, this exhibition demonstrates how designers such as Dior, Balenciaga, and Chanel brought glamour back to Europe after World War II. Exhibition organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Presence or Absence: The Photographs of Tokihiro Sato

Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery

June 18-September 12, 2010

An exhibition of 13 landscape photographs by one of Japan's most acclaimed and best-known contemporary artists, Tokihiro Sato uses traditional technology in untraditional ways. His photographs can take up to three hours to make as he moves across the landscape with mirrors and lights to create ultra-long exposures using a large-format, 8 x 10 camera set on a tripod. Through his photographs, Sato creates a poetic, lyrical world. Perfectly still and deep, each piece presents a scene of light that seems to breathe and only exist in a dream.
