With the musical hit Beehive: The '60s Musical Sensation bringing down the house through October 15, the Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville has launched its 29th season, replete with classics, musicals and regional premieres.
For two nights only, October 21 and 22, New York actor Ashton Crosby brings his tour of Mark Twain: Adventures in American Humor back to the Roxy stage. Then on October 28 and 29, the infamous 1938 Mercury Theatre radio broadcast will be recreated live on stage with The War of the Worlds.
Autumn at the Roxy brings the works of Charles Dickens with A Tale of Two Cities, November 4-19 and the Roxy's holiday tradition - A Christmas Carol starring Roxy artistic director John McDonald - runs November 25 through December 17.
After the holidays, audiences can look forward to the Roxy's tenth annual rendition of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues on January 6 through February 4, presented in the theatre's otherspace; Happily Ever After, a stage adaptation of children's tales that will be presented at 2 p.m. on January 14, 21 and 28 and February 4 and 11; then, the musical revue I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change will pay tribute to those who have loved and lost and to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance on February 10- March 3.
William Shakespeare makes his return to the Roxy Stage with The Winter's Tale spinning its web on the stage on March 9- 17.
John McDonald's adaptation of The Red Badge of Courage runs March 30- April 7. Telling of the experience of war from the point of view of an ordinary soldier, Stephen Crane's tale of heroism is considered the first modern war novel.
For the spring, middle Tennessee audiences can look forward to the award-winning Spring Awakening, running April 13- May 5. Winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, this musical celebrates the journey from youth to adulthood with power, poignancy and. Adapted from Frank Wedekind's 1891 expressionist play about the trials, tears and exhilaration of the teen years, it has been hailed as the "Best Musical of the Year" by the New York Times, New York Post, Star Ledger, Journal News, New York Observer and USA Today. This production contains language and subject matter not appropriate for all audiences.
Also playing this season will be Schoolhouse Rock Live! at 2 p.m. April 14, 28 and May 5; the hit musical The Wedding Singer, starring Josh Bernaski, running May 25 through June 23; 13 The Musical at 6 p.m., running May 11-26; and the regional premieres of the Stephen Schwartz musical Captain Louie at 6 p.m. on June 22-July 7, followed by the Garry Marshall/ Paul Williams musical Happy Days: The Musical, running July 13-August 18, which will wrap up the season. This new musical reintroduces one of America's best-loved families, the Cunninghams, and the days of 1959 Milwaukee complete with varsity sweaters, hula hoops and jukebox sock-hoppin'.
In addition, the Roxy Regional Theatre will also present special events, including Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays on Monday, November 7, at 7 p.m., and the premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis' Motherfucker with the Hat in the spring.
