fragile & useless - LCR.I/GROUP/2019-2022
By Simon Portigal
Presented in English
May 9 + 10, 7 pm + May 12 + 13, 8 pm
After lcr.i/2069/2015-2019, an iterative performance-meditation on isolation, digitization, and the image, Simon Portigal will present his first evening-length group creation. In collaboration with three montreal-based performers, lcr.i/group/2019-2022 experiments with choreography as a vulgarized social algorithm. Through gamified practices of role-play, exchange, and interdependence, lcr.i/group/2019-2022 sensually reifies collective technologies by the action of dancing together.
Originally from Alberta, Simon Portigal is an anglophone artist working with contemporary dance and experimental choreographic forms in Montreal. His work purposefully takes on a dense and fragmented form that he associates with being a queer first-gen child of the internet, growing up overseas as a third-culture kid, and a post-secondary education in post-modern Western concert dance. Taking from personal experiences of alienation, his work identifies and attempts to unravel inherited structures in the interest of proposing new choreographic forms.
