On Wednesday, October 27th, Tableau D'Hôte Theatre held its first fundraising evening at the cool (but ‘hot') O Patro Vys on Mont Royal Est. Founded by Mike Payette and Mathieu Perron, Tableau D'Hôte Theatre is mandated to promote Canadian theatre in Montreal.

Music and live-acts rocked the house all night long with performances from rock/grunge band The BlackVoid and singer/songwriters Matt Stern, and Meghan Dove. Liz Burns performed an excerpt from the upcoming TDHT premiere Dark Owl and a beautiful piece was presented by choreographer/dancer Veronique Gaudreau with Liz Valdez. Fan favourite (and busy lady) Miss Sugarpuss gave a hilarious show-stopping burlesque routine and actor/musician Chimwemwe Miller got people dancing with his conguero drum troupe. The night was kept rolling with Masters of Ceremony and professional laugh-makers Dan Jeannotte and Anders Yates from Uncalled For.

Before this occasion, Payette and Perron never had the resources to put together an event like this, but the incredible amount of contributions by artists and non-artists in the city made the night something to remember. "We are still overwhelmed by the amount of warmth and support that was in the air last night. More than anything, the success of the event put a spotlight on Montreal theatre's strong heart beat and dynamic community. We have only existed for six years, so imagine how shocked and humbled we were by everyone who wanted to lend their support to help TDHT continue for years to come," says Artistic director Mike Payette.

Over a hundred supporters and performers attended the fundraiser, including local theatre celebrities like Geordie Artistic Director Dean Fleming (who stepped away from set construction of the company's For Arts Sake opening next week), members from the cast of Scapegoat Carnivale's Medea (playing at Centaur until Saturday), and Greg MacArthur (Playwrights' Workshop Montréal) whose play Toxique will be presented at Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui in March 2011, as well as a host of artists and those simply wanting to have a great night.

The silent and live auctions were a fight to the end with prizes including visual arts, private Burlesque lessons, 3-course vegetarian/vegan cuisine, private workshops, Shiatsu packages, and even Mike Payette, who was purchased for a day!

At the end of it all, the company raised funds that went beyond expectation, and will go directly into their season. The evening was capped off by a non-stop dance party DJ'ed by the multi-talented Chimwemwe Miller.

"We cannot thank everyone enough for making this event a success. There are just too few words. But we can happily say we look forward to continuing a home here for another six years," said overjoyed Tableau D'Hôte Theatre General Manager, Mat Perron.

Now one of the city's leading independent theatre companies, TDHT has worked with dozens of local artists and produced 18 Canadian plays by writers from coast to coast. The company has garnered several awards along with tremendous support and encouragement from the artistic community.
