In Montreal's notoriously raucous heyday, it was known as 'Sin City of the North'. The city was an epicenter of entertainment and debauchery where gangsters, showgirls and jazzmen ran rampant; where champagne flowed like water and the clubs were noisy, sexy and had plenty of bounce. Having recently celebrated The Wiggle Room's first anniversary, proprietor Jeremy Hechtman is titillated to announce the show bar's newest ongoing event- Thursday night's Weird Ass Game Show. This prize-filled night will join Wednesday's Voix-de-Ville contest variety show as fun seekers' weeknight go-to destination.
Thursday nights are all about winning. The Weird Ass Game Show is an exciting combination of the classic 60s & 70s American and the modern Japanese game show styles. This is the audience's chance to be on a live game show where the prizes and fun are all very real. Each week The Wiggle Room brings in some of the hottest and most entertaining Montreal celebrities from the world of burlesque, comedy, variety and music, and pairs them with contestants from the audience to play a wide variety of games. The evening is superbly hosted by the master of weird himself, the Divine Danny Dee (comedian Dan Derkson), along with Jason Yearow, Jeremy Hechtman & the voluptuous Velvet La Touche. Prizes include gift certificates from Schwartz', Vapeur Express, Evenko and The Wiggle Room- almost no one leaves empty handed.
Dan Derkson, who created the Weird Ass Game Show with Jeremy Hechtman, is excited about playing with the format of the show, "A game show is something we all are familiar with so we're trying to make this one truly ours and are striving to develop new and original game concepts." Derkson is having a great time and is delighted that the audience response has been just as enthusiastic, "This is a riot. Every night I'm onstage there is a moment where I always go, 'Holy crap I'm hosting a game show. This is hilarious.'" For him, The Wiggle Room is inspirational, "Every time I'm in there, whether it's working on or just to see a show, I always walk away with the desire to find or create something- an act, a show, a piece of material or a song to sing. The Wiggle Room brings out the best in its performers. Jeremy Hechtman always pushes me to find cool new ideas or ways to tweak existing ideas to make them better."
Hechtman laments that our lives have lost a certain amount of class over the decades, "The modern world has a mass produced, pre-packaged feel to it. I want to work where the drinks are delicious, the music is hot and the women sparkle, and I think others want the same thing. That's why I created The Wiggle Room, a glitter encrusted, cocktail swilling haven for those looking to put a little class back into their nightlife." Every night is an opening night at The Wiggle Room according to Hechtman, who is the former artistic director of MainLine Theatre, "Every show comes with the same anxiety and excitement and nerves and danger and energy that opening night brings, only we do it at least 5 nights a week. I look forward to Thursday night's Weird Ass Game Show because it is the most fun and chaotic."
There's a show and a drink for every taste and budget at The Wiggle Room. Here you'll find fancy cocktails and local beers, Saturday night dress-up spectacles and mid-week casual fun. Though obscure in its origin, one definition for the word Vaudeville comes from Voix-de-Ville. Packed with gems from the worlds of burlesque, comedy, magic, dance, circus, music and more, Wednesday night's Voix-de-Ville variety show offers a dizzying array of entertainment, with everyone vying for the $100 cash prize. Other nights offer an amazing schedule of acts from full burlesque revues to comedy nights; from live music to fun workshops. The heart of the room is Signature Saturdays when The Wiggle Room presents burlesque revues with the crème de la crème of Montreal's best burlesque and cabaret performers.
At The Wiggle Room, Montreal's premiere show bar, vintage style meets contemporary cabaret. The cozy room is intimate and rich in character and tone with deep purple walls, gold accents, warm exposed brick and vintage cocktail tables and chairs. It hearkens back to Montreal's vibrant nightclubs of the 50s where bands were hot and the mood was loose and fun; when service and style were paramount. You can escape to The Wiggle Room from Wednesday-Sunday, with added special events. Check the schedule regularly to see top-notch musicians, burlesque artists and comedy stars, along with fun and prize-winning variety shows. And remember- A little wiggle goes a long way!
