The Segal Centre is proud to announce that its world premiere production of The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz: The Musical, set to open today, June 11, will receive a one week extension to meet audience demand. Based on the classic Montreal coming of age novel by Mordecai Richler, with book and lyrics by David Spencer, music by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, and directed by Austin Pendleton, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz: The Musical was officially scheduled to close on Sunday, June 28. It will now run an additional week through Sunday, July 5th. Tickets for these added performances are now on sale.
The final English theatre production of the Segal Centre's 2014-2015 Season has sold over 6500 tickets to date, and had already broken the Segal Centre's record for daily ticket sales.
"We are thrilled to see so many Montrealers follow this new chapter in Duddy Kravitz's journey. It is a testament to the lasting power of Mordecai Richler's distinctive voice and cultural legacy in 2015," said Lisa Rubin, the Segal Centre's Artistic and Executive Director. "To have the extraordinary creative trio of David Spencer, Alan Menken and Austin Pendleton premiere their musical adaptation in the very city where the story unfolds is a momentous occasion for both the Segal Centre and Richler fans alike."
The Segal Centre production stars an all-Canadian cast led by Ken James Stewart (Duddy Kravitz), Marie-Pierre de Brienne (Yvette), George Masswohl (Max), Howard Jerome (Simcha), Adrian Marchuk (Lenny), Victor A. Young (Benjy), David Coomber (Virgil), Michael Rudder (Jerry Dingelman), with Albane Chateau, Gab Desmond, Julia Halfyard and Michael Daniel Murphy in various ensemble roles, accompanied by a live band on stage under the musical direction of Jonathan Monro and Nick Burgess (Assistant Musical Director).
The creative team is comprised of Dayna Tekatch (Movement Consultant), Michael Eagan (Set & Costumes), Luc Prairie (Lighting) and Peter Balov (Sound).
Mordecai Richler's scoundrel of St. Urbain Street comes of age
Inspired by the 1959 novel and the feature film by the same name, the musical follows the coming of age of ambitious young hustler Duddy Kravitz on the streets of 1950s Montreal. Obsessed with his grandfather's saying "A man without land is nobody," and desperate to prove himself, he risks making his name at the expense of those he loves; it all comes down to choosing what kind of man he wants to be.
Penguin-Random House Canada Books this Spring re-issued the complete works of Mordecai Richler. The newly printed The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz features the Segal Centre's own poster design, created by Écorce Atelier, on the cover! Audience members wishing to re-discover the original 1959 novel can purchase a copy at the theatre during the run of the show.
