Kaleidoscope Theatre Montreal will present their fourth production and first ever musical: To Be: In Concert, created and directed by founder Trevor Barrette. Following their production of the Canadian premiere of None of the Above, the collective is thrilled to be back at the MainLine Theatre from January 23rd to the 26th. Set in present day Montreal, To Be explores the themes of sexuality, sexual identity and the importance of love in the face of personal tribulation and loss.
Almost one year has passed since the death of Adam's estranged father and his present melancholy has his family worried. When he confesses to his 'gay ol' cousin' Benny that the cause of his despair is a lack luster fling with a girl from his class, Benny brings him to the Queen's club - a drag bar run by the mischievous Robyn and the Queen's fairy band. There, Adam meets Sebastian, a young aspiring actor, and he soon realizes why he has been having so many issues in the girl department... As he decides to pursue this new and exciting relationship in secret, Adam becomes conflicted by the choices he is making and the past he has tried so hard to forget. It is then that he is confronted by the Ghost of his late father...
"To Be is really a story about acceptance," says creator and director Trevor Barrette. "It's about a young man's journey of self-discovery as he learns how to accept his father's death and this new and exciting relationship with another man. Off the top he is very confused, but determined to discover what it means to be true to himself."
Presented in a concert version, To Be is a unique hybrid between the modern day musical and the Shakespearean classic. The musical's thematic score ranges from the intimate to the toe-tappingly campy and delves into many different styles and genres. Text adapted from some of the Bard's most celebrated pieces is woven into the story to elevate and to shed a distinctive light on some of the key moments of the musical.
To Be: In Concert features a 3-piece band and an all-male cast of 10 directed by Trevor Barrette with musical direction by Chris Barillaro and choreography by Vlad Alexis. Lighting and sound designed by Isabel Quintero Faia. Costumes and set designed by Anna Delfino. Starring: Sean Colby (Adam), Adam Capriolo (Sebastian), Jonathan Patterson (Queen/Ghost), Jon Corkal (Robyn) and Scott Humphrey(Benny) with Brett Seivwreight, Laurent Pitre, Vlad Alexis, Marc Ducusin and Kenny Streule.
