Femmes du Feu, one of Canada's leading innovators in aerial circus works, is proud to announce the fourth annual Circus Sessions at Harbourfront Centre Theatre as part of the NextSteps 17/18 Season. This week-long creative laboratory and think-tank that will offer 15 national and international contemporary circus artists, from all disciplines, the opportunity to work with internationally renowned circus artist/instructor/researcher, Marie Andrée Robitaille. Circus Sessions culminates in a two-night performance of new collaborative work created during the experimental week.
Performances will take place on April 28th and April 29th at 8:00pm at Harbourfront Centre Theatre. Circus Sessions' mandate is to support the progression of Canadian contemporary circus while also focusing on professional artist development. Under the artistic guidance of this years' mentor, Marie-Andrée Robitaille, the week-long workshops will allow contemporary circus artists to engage, explore and push their own boundaries in a supportive environment while developing new ideas and creations.
"We are so excited to producing our 4th Circus Sessions for 2018. Each year, I have brought in an international mentor from each of the families of the circus to guide the creative process. This year, our mentor, Marie-Andreé Robitaille, works from roots in acrobatics. Marie-Andreé is a powerhouse circus artist, a feminist and an academic. I am also excited and honoured to be working with Alex Blumer to explore accessibility in circus. This project excited me because I love to surprise and diving into the unknown. The participants are a diverse and wacky group of artists, so I'm curious what will cook up this year! "
This year, Circus Sessions has also invited Alex Bulmer and Erin Ball to increase accessibility to a diverse range of artists. The goal is to encourage artists to engage in a creative dialogue that cultivates experimentation, evolving form, arts advocacy, networking, and audience development and engagement strategies. Marie-Andreé Robitaille is a force in contemporary circus. She comes from an acrobatic and dance background and is now senior lecturer in circus, head of the Bachelor of Arts in circus at the School of Dance and Circus, DOCH parts of Stockholm University of the Arts UNIARTS (Sweden), and Artistic Director of Cirkus Perspektiv (Sweden).
