Christ Church Cathedral is hosting A Few Acres of Snow, a free (donations happily accepted) community outreach event, on January 24, 2014 at 7:30pm. The evening of winter-themed readings and performances features songs, musings and tales by Canadian artists. The public is invited to this majestic building, located in the heart of downtown Montreal, transformed for the occasion into a cozy, live poetry lounge.
"So often we find reason to dislike the deep-freeze of winter in Canada. We hope that this unique experience will show how winter can inspire - as it did for so many poets, essayists, story-tellers and song-writers over the centuries," says Paul Hopkins, volunteer event producer. "Winter in Montreal has always offered a wealth of opportunities for contemplation and solitude, as well as for community and play." Hopkins continues, "The event name, A Few Acres of Snow, is from a translation of Voltaire's negative evaluation of Canada in the 18th century as lacking in economic value. I thought it was a fun irony."
Among the evening's performers will be Paul Hopkins (Montreal actor and Artistic Director of Shakespeare-in-the-Park), Keir Cutler (Teaching Shakespeare), Montreal-based actors, Dara Murphy and Jane Gilchrist, J. Paul Kennington (Dean of Christ Church Cathedral) as well as members of the Cathedral community.
The works of featured artists and journalists will include: Josh Freed, Jane Gilchrist, Ellie Clavier-Rothstein, Adam Gopnik, Robyn Sarah, Duncan Campbell Scott, Gina Roitman, Robert Service, Charles Dawson Shanly, Edgar Andrew Collard, John Kalbfleisch, Marie-Lynn Hammond, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell,.
Doors open at 7:30pm and patrons will be invited to share a glass of mulled wine, hot-spiced cider or hot chocolate as they mingle and settle in. Readings begin at 8:00pm. Event organizers invite the pubic to bring a favourite wrap, blanket or pillow to add to the comfy atmosphere.
A Few Acres of Snow is a production of The Arts Task Force of Christ Church Cathedral.
