"After almost a decade of performing in a discipline where the visual and physical are most often valued above the verbal, the urge to speak became too strong to ignore." explains Becky Lou. "This prompted me to confront my fear of being heard as well as seen, and in turn, to examine the events in my life that may have contributed to the idea that my body was of more value than my thoughts, feelings and words."
"...erotic, laced with hilarity and moments of introspection and poignancy."- Absinthe.com.au
Shake is a touching and hilarious account of growing up female, and an audacious experiment in burlesque performance. "I basically perform all of my well-known acts in less than an hour, without leaving the stage to change costumes" says Becky Lou. She continues, "The illusion of pin-up perfection, which often gives a burlesque performer their power, is challenged, and the potential for chaos is ever present. No two nights are the same."
Directed by Australian cabaret powerhouse Wes Snelling, Shake's seasons at the 2015 and 2016 Australian Fringe Festivals garnered a string of four and five star reviews and was nominated for 'Best Cabaret' at Perth Fringe World. Becky Lou is excited to bring her show to Montreal and experience the St-Ambroise Fringe, "Its reputation as one of the most welcoming and exciting Fringe Festivals has reached Australia and I hear that the city's burlesque scene is thriving."
"Becky Lou evokes Golden Age Hollywood in her costumes, music and sense of humour. She is a charming goofball with a clown-like range of facial expressions reminiscent of Lucille Ball, and a flapper-esque style that makes her easy to picture as a silver-screen beauty." ***** - DirtandCandy.com
