About The Way Way West
Out of the darkness, we hear a ghost-like melody as the Wayfaring Stranger sets the stage for several tales of pioneers who are “movin’ on” to a new frontier in the spring of 1857. Through poetry, song, and storytelling, the stranger paints a picture of a perfect storm: the encroaching Civil War, the rise of Brigham Young and the Mormon Militia, Buchanan’s Blunder, and the vulnerable wagon trains that travel the well-worn trails of the American west. This tinder box is ignited by the pain and alcoholism of one Hector McClain. As the Miller family from Arkansas make their way west on the Baker/Fancher wagon train, they are unaware of what awaits at Mountain Meadows in the Utah Territory. It is one of the lesser known, yet greatest tragedies of the American west, and it leaves one young boy full of vengeance and anger for the rest of his short life. As one man’s pain is passed along, these unrelated human beings collide with each other in life and in death, finding all they had left was The Way Way West.
