This multiple Tony Award winner is based on the life of John Merrick, a nineteenth-century victim of rare skin and bone diseases who becomes the star freak attraction in traveling sideshows. Under the care of a celebrated young physician whose motives are not always clear-even to himself-Merrick is launched into London society and slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane and witty favorite of the aristocracy only to be denied his ultimate dream: to live and be treated as a regular man like any other.
