Created as a Creative Collaboration
DENIM, a new play (with music) by BA alum playwright Savannah Reich devised and directed by Lisa Channer. This project will examine and explode the fantasies we tell about American Democracy and the myth of classlessness by weaving through the history of denim jeans. Jeans were created as a sturdy work uniform for gold miners during the CA gold rush by immigrant entrepreneur Levi Strauss and have since become both completely ubiquitous and a universal and international symbol for the myths of classlessness and opportunity that are associated with America. DENIM will pull the threads of American democracy and see what unravels and what holds strong.
