Tonight, October 26th, 2013 Theatre Pro Rata will open its 13th season with Bertolt Brecht's play Good Woman of Setzuan at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis, MN.
Good Woman of Setzuan is Brecht's classic story about the only decent person in the town of Setzuan, the prostitute Shen Te, and how her generosity is tested by the gods. Shen Te is given a better life her but charitable nature threatens to leave her with nothing. In order to maintain her kindness she invents a cold-hearted alter ego, her cousin Shui Ta, who can stand up to the people who take advantage of her. Ultimately, the charade cannot last and Shen Te must defend her actions (and those of humanity) to the gods.Costume designer Mandi Johnson said of the show's concept, "The designers have talked about sharing building materials and doing a lot of upcycling of things like plastic bags and newspapers and other trashy things. I always like working with non-traditional materials to make costumes, and I'm excited to see these things tied throughout the design for the production." Director Carin Bratlie said, "Our audience loves it when Pro Rata tackles Brecht. I've been drawn to Good Woman since I first read it almost 20 years ago. It's funny, insightful and ageless."General admission tickets on a sliding scale from $14 to $41 at the door.
