A festival of new comic theater will warm hearts, lift spirits, and provide a bellyful of laughs during Minnesota's coldest time of year when the Southern Theater presents the Brouhaha Comedy Festival, January 19-23, 2011.
The festival's six performance segments will include new short plays, improvised comic theater, new clown theater and classic comedy plays presented in hour-long segments and a repertory format. Each segment will be presented three times over five days.
A variety of Twin Cities performance artists will lead the creation of each segment. The creative leaders will include Sarah Agnew, Jim Lichtscheidl and Eriq Nelson; Genevieve Bennett; David Hanbury (Mrs. Smith and The Sisters Boil); Joanna Harmon and Ally Carey; Brian Balcom & Steve Moulds (The New Theatre Group); and Kimberly Richardson and Sara Richardson.
"My motivation for scheduling this comedy festival is totally self-serving," said Jon Ferguson, the Southern's theater curator. "By the time January and February come around in Minnesota and the real cold has set in, I am in desperate need of some comedy," said Ferguson. "I wanted to create a mini festival of new comic work that would warm us at that time, and showcase some of the Twin Cities' most vibrant and innovative playmaking and comic theater talent."
