The Southern Theater presents 'Southern Songbook,' a celebration of the art of song and process of songwriting in a new music series beginning November 14, 2010.

'Southern Songbook' explores the history, culture and art of popular song through performances and conversations with Twin Cities songwriters. In each uniquely themed show, accomplished musicians and emerging artists will offer fresh interpretations of song standards and premiere new material. Instrumentalists of Heiruspecs will serve as the house band throughout the series.

"Apart from the language of science and mathematics, the most universal means of communication is music," said Songbook music director DeVon Gray (dVRG). "Think about how clearly a heart wrenching tune conveys its sentiment. There's no mistaking a happy tune or a somber funeral march. In this concert we're using songs that have remained vital and relevant decades beyond their creation, and generations past their inception. In our new interpretations and sonic environments we'll highlight what makes these songs amazing, and we'll elevate what makes them human."

Lush Life: Interpretations of the American jazz canon will be hosted by Adam Levy and DJ Jake Rudh. Guest musicians include Mayda, Ill Chemistry, Toki Wright, Janey Winterbauer, Omaur Bliss, Ashleigh Still and Bethany Larson.
