The Guthrie is a great place to experience the natural beauty of autumn in the Midwest! Whether enjoying a pre-show cocktail on the 178-foot cantilever bridge overlooking the Mississippi River, or enjoying the warm glow of the amber glass boxed lobby of the Dowling Studio, travelers will find many spots to view the fall colors of the surrounding Minneapolis landscape in this inviting and architecturally stunning destination, lauded as "a 21st century dream factory" by Time magazine.

PRODUCTION NEWS

Canadian-born actress Linda Thorson (Tara King in the British television show The Avengers) will lead the cast of The Importance of Being Earnest as Lady Bracknell, with 2007 University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program graduate John Skelley as Algernon Moncrieff and 2005 Juilliard graduate Nick Mennell as Jack Worthing. Full casting for the production, which will be directed by Joe Dowling and performed September 12 - November 8 on the Wurtele Thrust Stage, will be announced shortly. The production begins rehearsals Tuesday, August 18.

Guthrie director Joe Dowling, known throughout Ireland and the United States as a preeminent director and scholar of Brian Friel's work, will honor the legendary Irish playwright's 80th birthday by returning to his acting roots to play the title role in Faith Healer, playing October 17 - December 6 on the McGuire Proscenium Stage. Haunted by shared memories, faith healer Frank Hardy, his wife Grace and talent manager Teddy each relay their own version of a single story and how they are ultimately broken by a final, fatal event. Dowling will take to the stage opposite Guthrie favorites Sally Wingert (Third) and Raye Birk (A Christmas Carol).

Tickets are now on sale for the highly-anticipated Guthrie WorldStage Series and Walker Art Center presentation of Druid Ireland's production of The Walworth Farce (October 21 - 25 at the Walker Art Center) through the Walker Art Center box office at 612.375.7600 or online at www.walkerart.org. The remarkable play by Enda Walsh combines hilarious moments with shocking realism as it delivers an achingly tender insight into what happens when we become stuck in the stories will tell ourselves about our lives.

The Guthrie's 35th annual production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (November 19 - December 31 on the Wurtele Thrust Stage) will receive a new 90-minute, no intermission adaptation by Barbara Field this holiday season, with Gary Gisselman returning to direct the classic for his ninth consecutive season and legendary stage and screen actor Peter Michael Goetz playing Ebenezer Scrooge. Goetz, who is currently playing Herbert Soppitt in J.B. Priestley's When We Are Married, is no stranger to the Guthrie's perennial holiday classic, having first appeared in the theater's original adaptation as Charles Dickens - a role he performed from 1975-1978 - and later returning to play Scrooge in 2001, 2002 and 2003 under the direction of Gisselman.

FOR GUTHRIE RESTAURANT, "CHANGE" IS GOOD

Sea Change, the new restaurant located on the theater's first floor, has opened to rave reviews. As one of the most recognized and respected chefs in the Upper Midwest Chef Tim McKee (winner of the 2009 James Beard Award for Best Chef Midwest) offers a menu of sustainable seafood, highlighting fisheries that use environmentally responsible methods of gathering and farming seafood. Reservations can be made online or by calling 612.225.6499.
