The Duluth Playhouse presents ROUGH MAGIC: A Theatrical Celebration of William Shakespeare's First Folio for one weekend only, April 7-9, 2016, in connection with the national tour of "First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare."
Seven years after William Shakespeare's death, his friends and fellow actors John Hemmings and Henry Condell published a collection of his plays in what is known as the First Folio.
Why should we care?
The First Folio is the only text we have for 18 of Shakespeare's plays. Without it, nearly half of his work, including plays as diverse as Julius Caesar, The Tempest and Macbeth would no longer exist. No Ides of March. No brave new world. No sound and fury.
It's a celebration by actors of actors.
In ROUGH MAGIC a cast of six, weaving in and out of scenes found only in the Folio, explores the hidden world beneath the book's surface-Shakespeare's theatrical world. Who were the specific actors that first performed these plays and brought them to life? How did they work? What were their theaters like? What traces of all of this remain in the plays? Rough Magic scrapes away 400 years of polished surfaces to gain a glimpse of the rough-and-ready, moment-to-moment world that created these amazing plays.
Starring Mike Pederson, Christa Schulz, Robert Lee, Kate Horvath, John Pokrzywinski and Christine Winkler Johnson, ROUGH MAGIC is directed and developed by Jason Scorich.
