SteppingStone Theatre is planning a special Opening Night Celebration for the play The Stinky Cheese Man. The play's music director and renowned local artist, Gary Rue, resplendent in tuxedo, will play music from the play and other SteppingStone productions on the piano in the lobby from 6:15-7:00 pm.
Gary and artist Gregory W. Bitz will be on hand to sign copies of their limited-edition piano book, containing the music from the play and Gregory's illustrations. The Theatre will also be providing samples of wonderful (and stinky!) cheeses from Whole Foods Market in St. Paul for the audience to taste.
We want our Opening Night attendees to really get the flavor of The Stinky Cheese Man production, and taste all aspects of it, jokes Ross Willits, Managing Director. We want to share that excitement with our Opening Night audience and to create a truly unique event. SteppingStone is celebrating not just the opening of The Stinky Cheese Man, but also the planned publication of the script by PlayScripts, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts.
This a great honor and wonderful news, as now our production's script will be available to a world-wide audience, says Richard Hitchler. He goes on to say, We commissioned the play back in 1998, and since then it has really taken on a life of its own. We¹ve been proud and excited to see our creation performed around the country. A few years ago, it was even performed in Shanghai, China!
Gary Rue says, ³I am excited about the publication of the script for The Stinky Cheese Man, AND to commemorate this wonderful event, we have created an illustrated piano book of all the music in the show so young and old alike can enjoy this music at home. The first 100 copies will be signed and numbered by the artist, Gregory W. Bitz. We will also have 50 first-run prints of the illustrations, hand-colored by Gregory, which he and I will also sign.² Hitchler adds, ³We are so very pleased that the script will be published and are delighted by Gary and Gregory¹s lovely piano book.
The play is based on Jon Scieszka¹s popular book; playwright Kent Stephens has kept the magic of the original, but renewed it with fresh enthusiasm. As Richard Hitchler says, ³The Stinky Cheese Man is a playful and witty takeoff of traditional fairy tales told the very same way that children enjoy telling stories. It is a perfect introduction to the world of theatre through imagination, storytelling, and familiar characters. Parents love this story as much as their children.² A classic but offbeat tale full of frenzied fun, SteppingStone Theatre¹s production of The Stinky Cheese Man is the perfect summer theatre experience for young and old alike.
