Highland Heartbeat, the group of Scottish vocalists known for blending traditional and contemporary music from a country renowned for its culture and inventiveness, will debut at Hennepin Theatre Trust's State Theatre, Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
Discovered after an intensive nationwide talent search, the ensemble calls on traditional Celtic musicians and offers a concert spanning generations-from traditional Scottish compositions like "Loch Lomond" to highland twists on pop hits including Bette Midler's "The Rose." It also premieres new compositions such as Beth Neilson Chapman and Fiona Kennedy's "The Kist" and Phil Cunningham's "Raise the Flag for Scotland." Tickets are on sale now. Highland Heartbeat's story began in 2007 when singer/actress Fiona Kennedy, a member of Scotland's leading theatrical family and well-known in North America as the host of "Tartan TV," and her sister Morven Kennedy decided that some of Scotland's incredibly talented young performers should be given the opportunity to shine on the world stage. In summer 2008, judges hand-picked the cast following intense auditions. Six vocalists, both male and female, were featured in this project to highlight Scottish culture which was filmed on location. The program culminated in a live concert at the Royal Theatre in Glasgow in August 2008 and is now airing nationally on PBS. Highland Heartbeat will debut in Minneapolis as part of a national tour visiting over 20 cities including Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago.
