Theatre in the Round Players (TRP) presents the musical The Fantasticks in performances July 8-31, 2011.
Why did this simple musical run for an astonishing 42 years off-Broadway? Because it's whimsical, poignant, and universal. Because of its songs, such as "Try To Remember" and "Soon It's Going to Rain". Because audiences have cared for the two young lovers and their warring families. And audiences will enjoy it all even more in the intimacy of TRP's arena.
For this production, director Bob May returns to the Twin Cities. May directed in theatres throughout the Cities in the late 1970-80s, including serving as artistic director of Centre Stage (1982-84). He earned a Master's degree in playwrighting from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and 22 of his plays and a book have been published. He currently teaches playwrighting and screenwriting at the University of Central Arkansas.
He directs a cast of eight, featuring Carl Schoenborn as El Gallo and Lars Lee and Carolyn Bartell Strauss as the young lovers. Kevin Stueven is musical director with sets designed by Sadie Ward, costumes by Dwight Larsen, and lighting by Daniel Ellis.
An audience discussion with director May and members of the company will follow the matinee performance on Sunday, July 17th.
Tickets are $22. For information, call the theatre's box office at 612-333-3010 or visit its website at www.TheatreintheRound.org.
