This September, The Phoenix Theater Project launches into its third season with ART by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton. Internationally acclaimed and winner of the 1998 Tony Award for best play, ART is a sharp and sarcastic comedy that has been performed around the world.
What would you do if your best friend spent a year’s salary on a painting? How about a white painting? On a white background? Just white? Maybe with some diagonAl White lines? Maybe?
Spurred by the purchase of an expensive, contemporary painting, three best friends discover how far they have drifted apart in one explosive evening. Tensions rise as uncomfortable truths are shared and the gloves come off, figuratively and literally. With Christopher Hampton’s translation, crackling dialogue and hilarious comedy delve into a raucous journey of friendship, art and humility.
ART is directed by Ellen Fenster (dir. Proof) and starring James Rodriguez, John Riedlinger, and Matt Rein (Proof, Green Eyes, dir. Private Eyes). The Phoenix Theater Project includes Ellen Fenster, Elena Giannetti, Jim Pounds, Matt Rein and Amy Schweickhardt. This project is in collaboration with Veterans in the Arts (www.veteransinthearts.org).
Performances run September 15th through the 30th at the MPLS Photo Center located at 2400 N 2nd St #200, Minneapolis, MN 55411, with tickets available online or at the door for $15.
