ODC/Dance Joins 2017/18 Northrop Dance Season

The modern and groundbreaking ODC/Dance explores the glory of nature and the chaos of creativity through dance, music and multimedia scenic design when it performs for the first time in Minnesota on Thu., Nov 2, at 7:30 pm at Northrop as a continuation of the 2017//18 Northrop Dance Season. Its program, boulders and bones, is a contemplative piece inspired by British environmental sculptor Andy Goldsworthy and set to an original, live cello score by Zoë Keating.

ODC/Dance is nationally known for its rigorous techniques, collaborative work, and a sensational blend of ballet and modern dance. On Northrop's stage, ODC/Dance plans to partner with its biggest artisan yet: the natural world. The piece boulders and bones uses the company's energy and pays tribute to landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy, whose creations are constructed from natural materials and displayed outdoors until transformed into its surrounding environment.

Set to a commissioned score composed by cellist Zoë Keating, with RJ Muna's towering time-lapse video of Goldsworthy's hillside sculpture Culvert Cairn bringing the artist's work to temporal life, this transforming, evening-length piece for 10 dancers (five men, five women) emphasizes intimate and athletic partnering. For the most part, Keating's score-veering dramatically between the melancholy and the propulsive-drives the dance, with the exception of one memorable extended solo performed in silence.

To complement ODC/Dance's collaboration with the natural environment, the University Libraries and Northop are also proud to co-present the free art exhibit Earth~Art~Movement: Andy Goldsworthy and Land Art in the Northrop Atrium Lobby Oct 9-Nov 12. Inspired by Goldsworthy's work, the exhibit includes a multi-media installation, a large-scale rock installation, and a tableau of photographs.

As a special holiday treat, ODC/Dance also is performing Margery Williams' childhood classic tale The Velveteen Rabbit on Sat, Nov 4, at 1:30 pm also at Northrop. Take part in the magical adventure of a young boy, his favorite toy, and the abiding power of love brought to life through music, dance, and narration. The performance will also include professional debuts of local student dancers from Twin Cities TU Dance School, ranging in ages 7-12.

ODC/Dance's performance of boulders and bones begins with a time-lapse photographic sequence of renowned British landscape sculptor Andy Goldsworthy's construction of Culvert Cairn in San Diego, Des Moines, and New York City. Filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer (Touch the Sound, Breathing Earth) worked with the sculptor for more than a year to capture his process of working with Mother Nature. This 2001 film finds the elegant, breathless balance between the artist and his medium.
