Returning to the Northrop stage on April 8, Scottish Ballet will perform Matthew Bourne's Highland Fling-a piece performed exclusively by the Glasgow-based company.

Following their Minnesota debut in the 2011//12 Northrop Dance Season, Scottish Ballet will return to Northrop on April 8 performing Matthew Bourne's Highland Fling.

A world-acclaimEd English choreographer, Matthew Bourne has received various prestigious awards including the Laurence Olivier Award, a Tony Award, and a Drama Desk Award. He is the only British director to have won Tony's for both Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography (for his 1995 version of Swan Lake). In 2016, he was also knighted in the New Year Honours for his outstanding services to the dance world. As an exclusive to Scottish Ballet, the choreographer bestowed the company the rights to his 1994 Highland Fling.

A 'romantic wee ballet,' Highland Fling follows the story of James- a young, recently-marriEd Scottish man with an undying passion for rock 'n' roll. Soon after his marriage to his childhood sweetheart Effie, he finds himself infatuated with a beguiling, beautiful gothic fairy. As his conflicting love for the fairy transforms into an obsession, he embarks on a fateful journey into the streets and nightclubs of Glasgow. Set with tartan drapes and a full, live orchestra, Scottish Ballet's modern twist on La Sylphide fuses high energy, ironic wit, and elegance with a shocking ending that confronts human pomposity.

Scottish Ballet first performed Highland Fling in 2013 and it is the only one of Matthew Bourne's works that he has permitted to be performed by a Dance Company other than his own. Scottish Ballet is Scotland's national Dance Company. Founded in 1969, it is much admired for its "vibrant energy, brilliant coherence and effortless visual elegance" (The Telegraph).
