Mixed Blood Theatre Company Presents MERMAID HOUR: REMIXED Image

A National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of Mermaid Hour: ReMixed opens at Mixed Blood on April 6th, 2018. This new chamber musical explores the gender continuum through the prism of a prepubescent transgender biracial girl. Written by David Valdes Greenwood, the show tells the story of how working class parents Pilar and Bird face the cracks in their marriage, their opposing parenting styles, and their fears as they negotiate their daughter's gender transition. Meanwhile, she navigates puberty, her first crush, and the possibility that YouTube holds all the answers. Original score written by Eric Mayson.

According to Jack Reuler, Mixed Blood's Artistic Director, "While not categorically a teatro, Mermaid Hour: ReMixed marks the 30th consecutive year in which Mixed Blood has produced work by, about, for, and/or with Latinos. And as we try to become an artistic home for biracial and trans theatre artists and audiences as well as a platform from which to launch world premieres, this show truly embodies Mixed Blood's aspirations."

The cast includes Azoralla Arroyo Caballero, Thallis Santesteban, Michael Hanna, Meng Xiong, Sheena Janson, and Cat Hammond. The production design team showcases the talents of Britton Mauk (scenic), Calvin Anderson (lights), Randy Wong-Westbrooke (props and costumes), Veronica Moreno (sound), Valerie St. Pierre Smith (costumes), Sarah Lozoff (movement), and Eric Mayson (composer/musical director).

"I am so excited by the breadth of talent and imagination of the artists bringing Mermaid Hour: ReMixed to life. I am thrilled to be a part of this incredible team of diverse minds and voices; it has been a joy building the world of this story, a world of family, of music, and a good deal of magic," says Director Leah Anderson.

Mermaid Hour: ReMixed plays a central role in ON OUR OWN TERMS: Voices at the Intersection of Transgender Experience and Mixed Blood Theatre, a series during the April 27-29 weekend. It will feature two performances of Mermaid Hour: ReMixed as well as performances of MJ Kaufman's Sensitive Guys and a reading of Ben Fisher's No Bull to propel Mixed Blood's ambition to become an artistic home for trans theatre artists

The non-musical version, entitled The Mermaid Hour, will also play at Actor's Theatre of Charlotte, Borderlands Theater (Tucson), and Milagro Theatre (Portland, OR) as part of this NNPN Rolling World Premiere. For more information please visit nnpn.org.

All performances take place in the Alan Page Auditorium in Mixed Blood's historic firehouse theatre.
