Magos Herrera, a Grammy Award nominee for best vocal jazz is a dazzlingly accomplished singer-songwriter known for her beguiling rhythmic scatting inflected with soulful Latin-Andalusian phrasings. She brings her signature vocals to the Ordway as a part of the Target World Music Series on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 7:30 p.m.

Born in Mexico City, Magos Herrera is considered one of the most beautiful voices and one of the most active vocalists of the contemporary Latin American jazz scene. Herrera is known for a unique Signature Sound that elegantly blends her classic jazz styling with Latin-American melodies. Fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and English, her repertoire is filled with the yearning romance, intimacy and enchantment of Mexican and Cuban sones and boleros and sultry, languid Brazilian beats.

"We're thrilled to welcome Magos Herrera to our robust 2011-2012 Target World Music and Dance Series lineup," says Patricia A. Mitchell, Ordway's president and CEO. "Magos is known for her diverse, emotional and vibrant musical tones and we are delighted to offer this talented performer to Twin Cities' audiences.

Herrera's career started in Italy in 1988 where she decided to pursue a professional career in music. Subsequently, she graduated from the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles with a degree in vocal performance. For more than 12 years, Herrera has performed at internationally renowned performing arts centers and festivals including the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Teatro de la Ciudad de México, Lunario del Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, Sala Galileo Galilei in Madrid, and the Barcelona International Jazz Festival.

Magos has been nominated twice for "Lunas del Auditorio Nacional" (2006-2009) in Mexico as "the best jazz concert of the year" along with Bobby McFerrin and Bill Frisell.
She has six CD recordings including "Cajuina," "Orquideas Susurrantes," "Pais Maravilla," "Todo Puede Inspirar," "Soliluna" and her latest, "Distancia," from Sunnyside Records.

"Magos' music is limitless and speaks straight to one's emotional self; her music really brings such a fresh and powerful coloration to the palette we call jazz," said Dan Purcia at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2009.

Prior to Herrera's public concert, the Ordway will host an Ordway Extra program in the Ordway's Marzitelli Foyer at 6:30 p.m. To learn more about these events, visit ordway.org/events.

During Herrera's visit to the Twin Cities, she will also be performing two concerts to local student audiences on October 27. An estimated crowd of more than 3,000 students in total will be able to hear Herrera's music.

Ely Guerra, originally scheduled for a concert on Friday, October 28 at the Ordway as a part of the 2011-2012 Season has been cancelled due to schedule conflicts.
