Liquid Music perpetually seeks to connect increasingly intrepid audiences with innovative new projects and iconoclastic artists through any means within reach. Now, through a new partnership with McNally Smith College of Music, Liquid Music has found a new platform to reach the masses via the fertile realm of audio podcasting with Liquid Music Playlist.

Over the course of the 15.16 Liquid Music season host Steve Seel from Classical Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) will speak with some of the most adventurous and genre-defying composers, musicians and performers in New Music today. Each conversation will have two parts: first, artists talk about their music and career; then, in the spirit of discovery that defines Liquid Music, artists will recommend music of another artist that inspires them. It's all part of the mission of Liquid Music, where the exploration of new ideas and the celebration of new sounds never stops.

The series begins with NYC-based composer William Brittelle who recently visited the Twin Cities for the premiere of Spiritual America. He explores "Noise as an emotional tool" with the music of London-based producer/electronic musician Arca. Upcoming episodes include Poliça's Channy Leaneagh investigating the grinding analogue sounds of Hamburg-based DJ/electronic artist Helena Hauff, violinist/violist Miranda Cuckson recommending work of jazz pianist/composer/Harvard professor Vijay Iyer, and Berlin-based conductor, arranger and musician André de Ridder talking about his life-long love of the music of lo-fi rocker Lou Barlow, with additional 15.16 Liquid Music artists to be announced throughout the season. Each episode manifests the breaking down of barriers between artist and audience and will provide deep rabbit holes for audiophiles to unearth and explore - both accomplishments integral to the mission of Liquid Music.

Students from McNally Smith will have the opportunity to observe and assist throughout the production of the podcast, working with Liquid Music Playlist creator and producer Don Lee at McNally's state-of-the-art recording studios. This partnership between a contemporary music school and forward thinking performance series underscores the Teaching For Tomorrow career-readiness curriculum at McNally.

Episodes, along with the season announcements for the 2015.16 series, will be available at liquidmusicseries.org/podcast and wherever else podcasts can be downloaded. (Soundcloud / iTunes)

A Playlist for Discovery

Classical MPR's Steve Seel notes, "These days, music is more about a continuum than categories. More artists than ever are traveling between 'camps' - you'd be surprised how many young indie composers are influenced by classical work, but equally how so many cutting-edge classical players are still listening to new music; electronic music, experimental and pop music. With Liquid Music Playlist we are looking at the process, the inspiration, and the zeitgeist."

"We just want to make great content as an extension of Liquid Music programming, encouraging listeners to continue exploring music that is new to them," adds Liquid Music Series curator and producer Kate Nordstrum. "We will record bite-sized 10 minute conversations with Liquid Music artists offering referrals. Steve and producer Don Lee will work with McNally Smith students to edit, record and stage what we hope will be insightful and meaningful additions to a series we are already so proud of. We hope people will listen along."

John Krogh, the Dean of Academic Affairs at McNally Smith, notes, "It makes sense that audio content related to music is moving in [the direction of podcasting]. That said, it is still a leap for a chamber orchestra, public radio and a contemporary music college to partner in producing the Liquid Music Playlist podcast. With its focus on influence and artistry, the podcast will generally ask, 'What works inspire these composers to make music and why?'"
