Conductor Jeannette Sorrell returns to The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO), December 20-23, to conduct four sold-out performances of Handel's Messiah. Sorrell will conduct the SPCO and The Singers -Minnesota Choral Artists along with an international quartet of singers in the orchestra's annual holiday presentation of Handel's beloved oratorio. The final performance of the series - Sunday, December 23 - will be livestreamed by the SPCO.
Sorrell, Founder and Artistic Director of Apollo's Fire-The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, made her debut with the SPCO in April 2017 as guest conductor and harpsichordist. She returns with her celebrated interpretation of Handel's Messiah, which she has performed with Apollo's Fire and other ensemble including her conducting debut with the National Symphony Orchestra in December 2017. For these performances of Handel's Messiah in Minnesota, Sorrell will be joined by soprano Carine Tinney, countertenor Reginald Mobley, tenor Rufus Müller, and baritone Jesse Blumberg, as well as the renowned vocal ensemble The Singers - Minnesota Choral Artists. The performances will take place at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis Minnesota on December 20 and 21, and at the Ordway Concert Hall in Saint Paul, Minnesota on December 22 and 23.
On Sunday, December 23, SPCO will livestream the fourth and final performance, accessible via their Online Concert Library. The concert and the high definition-definition-quality livestream will begin at 3:00 p.m. EST/2:00 p.m. CST. The livestream can be viewed here.
On February 1 and 2, 2019 Sorrell will appear as a guest harpsichordist with the Utah Symphony, performing Bach's Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 5 and 6. The following week, she will lead soloists of the San Antonio Symphony and play the harpsichord in all six of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, February 8 and 9, 2019.
Jeannette Sorrell, with her ensemble Apollo's Fire-The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album earlier this month. The recording, Songs of Orpheus with tenor Karim Sulayman, explores songs from the many interpretations of the famous Orpheus story, including songs by Monteverdi, Caccini, d'India, and Landi, among others.
