Hennepin Theatre Trust is set to launch the SpotLight Cabaret Series, a new program showcasing outstanding Minnesota high school students producing and performing musical theatre. The first cabaret is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, July 18 at Hell's Kitchen Restaurant (80 9th Street South, Mpls., 55402). It will feature 15 students from Andover, Benilde-St. Margaret's (St. Louis Park), Blaine, Champlin Park, Chanhassen, Chaska, Columbia Heights, Edina, Hill-Murray (Maplewood), Jefferson (Bloomington), Maple Grove, Minnetonka, St. Francis and Southwest (Minneapolis) High School.

With a theme of "Seven Deadly Sins," students will direct, produce, sing and act in songs and scenes from classic musicals to original productions. See attached list of participating students. The SpotLight Cabaret Series is open to the public and tickets can be purchased for $10 each online at HennepinTheatreTrust.org. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the event on July 18. The next cabaret will be held on Monday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Fine Line Music Café (318 1st Avenue North, Mpls., 55401). Visit our website at HennepinTheatreTrust.org for information on upcoming cabarets.

The cabaret series is a hands-on performing experience open to all participants in the SpotLight Musical Theatre Program. Actors work with local theatre professionals such as Twin Cities actress Catherine Battocletti and sometimes of Broadway touring casts. Technical students, including lighting, sound engineers or set designers, also participate.

The SpotLight Cabaret Series is part of Hennepin Theatre Trust's SpotLight Musical Theatre Program, supporting the work of Minnesota high schools that present musical theatre. During the 2010-11 school year, 47 schools participated throughout the state. The yearlong experience culminates in the annual SpotLight Showcase, a professionally produced evening combining student performances and awards held at the Orpheum Theatre.
