Laughter, romance, and adventure go hand-in-hand-in-hand in this hilarious spin on the classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller. Framed for murder, ordinary Englishman Richard Hannay races against time to solve the secret of "The 39 Steps" before the police and evil assassins catch up with him. Created by famed British comedian Patrick Barlow, The 39 Steps won the Olivier Award in 2007 for Best New Comedy and opened on Broadway in 2008.
This newest Commonweal production is directed by Alan Bailey, who returns to Lanesboro after previously directing Inspecting Carol, Harvey, and last season's hit comedy, Sylvia. Commonweal's Executive Director Hal Cropp plays Hannay, the man running for his life, and Resident Artists Stef
Dickens, Scott Dixon, and Adrienne Sweeney combine to portray more than 30 characters as the chase goes from London-to-Scotland-and-back for a dramatic conclusion.
Carolyn Fast serves as stage manager and leads the production team consisting of designers Jason Underferth (lights, sets, and sound effects), Annie Cady (costumes), and Gary Danciu (props).
Thanks to support from F&M Community Bank, special weekday matinee performances are available for school groups at only $5 per person, which includes a study guide, video materials, pre-show classroom workshop, and post-performance discussion with the actors.
All performances are at The Commonweal Theatre, 208 Parkway Avenue North, in downtown Lanesboro. Ticket prices are $30 with discounts available for students and groups of ten or more.
