On October 23, 2013 Renaissance Theaterworks (RTW), in collaboration with Milwaukee Public Theatre (MPT), will honor Disability Awareness month with an event that promises to be a new avenue for disability awareness. "This will be an evening of humor and inspiration as we challenge the stereotypes of disability and celebrate artists with disabilities" shares Julie Swenson, RTW's Producing Director. Making A Scene - A Celebration of the Senses features excerpts from Barbara Leigh'sSurvival Revival Revue; several monologues by Chastity Washington, stand-up comedienne from NAMI; stories by Ruth Silver from her book Invisible: My Journey Through Vision and Hearing Loss; and a surprise performance by girls and women from Vision Forward.

Making A Scene is a part of RTW's 2013/14 "Diverse Works" programming - through community collaborations such as this, Diverse Works illuminates social issues by giving voice to the seldom heard. Making A Scene is one of MPT's "Tap the Potential" events, designed to challenge stereotypes of disability through performances and artworks presented by artists who have disabilities themselves. The program's working definition of "Artist with Disabilities" is anyone whose personal or professional life has been impacted by a physical or mental health condition.
